The Sony Xperia Z1S was announced this year at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) in Las Vegas. Well, I’ll get straight to it.
The Z1S has got a 5″ Full HD 1080p Display. And it’s not the conventional LCD or AMOLED. It’s TRILUMINOS Display. Basically, two red and green quantum dots are placed in front of each blue LED to deliver a wider colour gamut for more realistic images. So skipping all the jargon, what’s the overall benefit to users ? TRILUMINOS Display technology creates incredibly true, natural shades of colors – just the way you want them. Hard-to-reproduce reds, aqua blues and emerald greens are displayed beautifully, making landscapes and seascapes appear more vivid, carrying a far more natural and vivid viewing experience with a heightened sense of depth. Faces look better too, with natural skin tones.
And with Sony’s exclusive X-Reality for mobile picture engine, everything you watch – from HD movies to web videos and photos – is analyzed and processed to deliver clean and clear pictures. The Intelligent Super Resolution technology reproduces lacking pixels, so you’ll be able to enjoy the great quality, even if it didn’t come to you that way. The screen of the Z1S has a pixel density of 441 ppi, adding to clarity.
Sony’s eliminated a layer of air in the construction of the Z1S and brought the touch panel closer to the display. This OptiContrast panel makes for less reflection and clearer viewing – even in bright sunlight, as well as creating a seamlessly black surface when the phone is turned off. By eliminating the sensor layer and integrating the touch panel to the display, the responsiveness and therefore, intuitiveness of the screen has been upped.
Well, that was quite a lot to talk about, about the display. Now the hardware specs.
The processor onboard the Z1S is the quad-core Snapdragon 800 2.2 Ghz processor with 2GB RAM and the Adreno 330 GPU, making surfing the web and playing 3D games a joy, with minimal battery consumption.
A 3000 mAh battery powers the smartphone with a claimed standby time of up to 600 hours. A feature called STAMINA Mode is quite handy on Xperia smartphones. Wi-Fi and Cellular Data is disabled in STAMINA Mode, but the primitive functions like receiving calls, texts and alarms are still active. And it’s also possible to decide which apps notifications you want in STANDBY Mode, giving more user flexibility.
Sony has claimed that it’s “the world’s best camera in a smartphone”. That might actually be true, you know. It’s a 20.7 megapixel baddy with 1080p Full HD video recording , with an extra large lens for taking in more light, resulting in better photos in low light conditions. The mobile image sensor is larger as well, for capturing more details of the scene. Motion Detection reduces blurring of photos and Steady Shot does the same for recording videos.
Social Live lets you broadcast video while recording it to Facebook. Now what if you want to check out the Comments and Likes the video is getting, how does one do that ? Well, Sony’s got a solution to that. Comments and Likes will appear on the camera viewfinder, so you can see both, what you’re recording video and the buzz the video is creating as well simultaneously.
Info-eye gives you the related information and details of what you’re snapping, from the heights of famous buildings to a synopsis of a book.
Oh, and yes, just like many of it’s other recent Xperia family members, the Z1S is waterproof and dustproof. It’s waterproof up to 1.5 metres of freshwater till 30 minutes. So, don’t plan on going to beach with the phone and capturing underwater photos.
The Z1S supports NFC (Near Field Communication), so you can share media with other NFC-enabled devices nearby, by simply touching the two devices together. Music can be streamed to wireless speakers or headphones, media can be shared with other smartphones and photos can be seen on Sony BRAVIA TVs, all with the help of NFC, of course if the devices have NFC capabilities.
The phone ships with Android version 4.3 Jelly Bean. I suppose a 4.4 update will be out, but now word on the street about it though. The Z1S supports LTE/4G, so you can get cellular data download speeds of up to 150 Mb/s. HD Voice eliminates background noise while conversing, making the user more audible to the other party. It comes with 32 GB of internal storage and microSD support, in one color- black. But frankly, I atleast, have got no problem at all with the black, it looks really elegant.
The Z1S is available for purchase from T-Mobile. Sony’s running a promotion currently for the Z1S, offering a year’s worth of Playstation Plus when you purchase a Z1S. Customers have until 5th March to claim the offer from Sony.
